The Trews Talk About Some of their Experiences During this Year's American Tour
When we first spoke to The Trews' lead guitarist, John-Angus MacDonald, earlier this year, it was when the CD, No Time For Later first dropped in the U.S. Since then they have toured the U.S. to promote the disc. Powerline A.D. spoke to Trews' vocalist/guitarist, Colin MacDonald, and drummer, Sean Dalton, to sum up this year's American tour.
POWERLINE A.D.: How was the American tour?
Colin MacDonald: Alright. It's a grind down in the States. We sort of have to work for everything we get. But that's alright. We're used to it. In Canada, it's going great. We do well in Canada.
POWERLINE A.D.: I heard there were some adventures on the American tour. Something about a tornado and the cops?
Sean Dalton: True story...
Colin MacDonald: We were in-between Wisconsin and Illinois, and there was this terrible, terrible weather, like tornado alley, you know, and the whole sky turned like dark green and it started to hail and rain and the wind was crazy. We went to a toll booth and the lady said tornadoes had just touched down not far from where we were, and to seek shelter. We kept driving along the highway and the rain was hitting the windshield so hard that the wipers couldn't keep up. So we had to pull over on the side, on a country road.
Sean Dalton: And we nearly got hit first. A van swerved and just missed us.
Colin MacDonald: It was all happening so quick. So, we pulled off the side road, to what led up to the gates of what I thought was a country club. We just pulled in as far as the gate, and it was locked. We were freaked out, the weather was having its way with us. Then a police officer pulled in, thought we were robbing the club during the storm — all the alarms were going off but that was because of the thunder and lightning. But it got really serious. He had his gun drawn. And he was getting really weird and angry.
He changed quite a bit when he came back and realized he made a mistake. He was kind of laughing, saying he was sorry. It was a weird situation to find yourself in. You're just trying to pull off the road because of a tornado and you become a suspect in a crime that's not happening.
Sean Dalton: And the cop had to give us a boost afterward because our car was running for so long, our battery ran out. So the cop apologized and then he gave us a boost.
POWERLINE A.D.: So some real excitement on tour in America!
Colin MacDonald: Yeah, the excitement you don't want.
POWERLINE A.D.: I've heard that it's great to experience The Trews live.
Colin MacDonald: That's where we really shine. We're proud of the records we've made. We think they get better and better as you make them but we're still mainly at home on-stage.
POWERLINE A.D.: So if you had to say something to a fan who has never heard of The Trews, you would say come see us live?
Colin MacDonald: Yeah. Come see us live before you judge. It's one thing to hear something on recording. It's good, it's solid, it's cool. But seeing it live, it tend to be where people really connect. And we're not very pretentious about who we open for. We consider any crowd a good crowd. We give it all we've got. We try to make it fun. You don't need too much pretense or context. It is what it is.
POWERLINE A.D.: What were your favorite cities to play in America?
Colin MacDonald: The places where it works for us in America are the border towns like Detroit and Buffalo. And the American fans can become so die-hard. Once they are there, they're really there. It is just hard getting them there to begin with. Because there's so much for the American audience. There are so many bands and so many great things that come from America. I have faith that once we find our touring fan base in America, it'll be a great one.

The Trews will be back to America again shortly, I'm sure. In the meantime, next month, the band will be releasing a 15-song acoustic live CD (available only in Canada). It will be a recording of two nights at the Glenn Gould theater in Toronto, Canada. The CD will be a combination of songs from the first three albums. Old songs redone acoustically, with a few new songs as well, such as the single, "Sing Your Heart Out" (released already to radio).
This CD will also be accompanied by a live DVD which will have the full 23 song set list as well as some cool documentary footage and some bonus features.
