POWERLINE ARCHIVE: Faster Pussycat Vocalist Taime Downe Talks About the Band's "Wake Me When It's Over" Album Prior to its Release
Straight from Powerline's archive are snippets of an interview conducted with lead singer Taime Downe of the L.A. glam rock band, Faster Pussycat.
On the 1989 album (left) Wake Me When It's Over:
Taime: Well, first of all, the title explains the kind of period we've been going through since we've been home. Just trying to find producers has been kinda like a nightmare, so we figured, Wake Me When It's Over. Because it was kind of like a bad dream.
But the new album's a little bit more of everything. It's got heavy songs, but it's also got funky ones, bluesy ones, good ballads, too. It's a way better production, too, than the last album. We had a lot more to work with though. I'm really happy with this record. I'm really happy with every song. It's a cool feeling.
On songwriting:
Taime: I do all the lyrics and I write some of the music, too. Like "Little Dove," I wrote... and "Slip of the Tongue." But it's mostly me, Brent (Muscat, guitar), and Greg (Steele, guitar). My lyrics mostly deal with personal shit. "House of Pain" is about a kid who didn't grow up with his father around. It's our first ballad. Took a long time to write.
"Where There's a Whip There's A Way"... that doesn't need any explanation. "Slip of the Tongue" is basically just about talking shit, people talking shit all the time. People always talking behind your back. And it's also about eating pussy. It's like a mix between the two."Poison Ivy" is basically about the lack of privacy. Someone invading your space. I think the video we made for this is really cool (view below). It's all band, no chicks. We already had made two videos with chicks in them, we left them out this time. We'll bring the chicks back when we do "Little Dove." We'll get some really nasty looking ones for a change. No teeth. Real big fat ones... Nah, we'll get some hot ones. "Little Dove" is about a porno chick.
On rumors of the drummer Mark Michaels leaving Faster Pussycat and getting dropped by their record label (Elektra) before the actual release of Wake Me When It's Over:
Taime: Well, people like rumors, you know. We had people calling up saying, 'Yeah, I heard you guys got dropped.' It was just someone starting a rumor. And they thought, since we didn't have an album coming out right tomorrow, it must be true. It's cool. It's a cool rumor because we know it's not true, and Elektra knows it's not true.
We also had rumors that our bassist got kicked out of the band. And there was this guy in New York saying that he was our new bass player. And with our drummer, Mark... he just basically got himself together.
On not being warmly received on certain tours (most notably, the Alice Cooper tour in the mid-80s):
Taime: It's hard going out with a band that is different than you. And I know it. I've been pelted with all kinds of rocks and garbage. But it's not that hard to deal with, because you get so pissed off that you just want to jump down there and beat the shit out of them, but you just hold back. You say 'Fuck it.' Those people are morons anyway. It's so stupid. Why stand there and flip bands off and throw shit. Why don't you just go out in the hallway and talk to your buddies or chicks or do something if you don't like the band.
About trend followers and the L.A. rock scene:
Taime: The L.A. rock scene is good. But I don't really go out that much, unless I really feel like it. You see the same faces every night. You could not go out for two months and go back and see the same people.If you're from out of town, it's cool, because you don't know who the idiots are, so you could deal with them. But if you live here for awhile you get to know who's a joke and who's not.
It's so funny watching these bands go from spandex to Guns N' Roses wannabes, and now everyone and their momma are buying tattoos out here on the Sunset Strip. It's like Jeeeesus Christ!
On the Faster Pussycat style:
Taime: I don't think we sound like anybody. I think we do have our own style. I mean, once you put on a Faster Pussycat song you'll be able to tell it's us. And there's a lot of generic shit out there. But people buy it, so they'll still sell it. and it could sell a lot. But if that's what it takes to make a million dollars, I rather be poor. I do what I like doing.
