Marc Garrison speaks to Ralf Scheepers (ex-Gamma Ray, current vocalist for Primal Fear).
Powerline A.D.: So you guys have just released your 8th studio album 16.6 (Before the Devil Knows You're Dead). Let's talk about the process of writing and recording this album.
Ralf: Some songs of 16.6 Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead were written in the beginning of 2008…… 80% of the album was prepared by a rough pre-production which took place in Sweden at Magnus’ house. Mat, Henny and Magnus had a session there and recorded all their ideas, also some vocal lines and lyrics. I added my stuff at my home studio and also added some lyrics and melodies. So you can say that Primal Fear has a writing quartet, Mat, Henny, Magnus and me.
Powerline A.D.: You have traditionally written songs that, while dealing in fantasy, science fiction, and personal experiences, often parallel politics, world events, or religion. Tell me about the lyrical themes and ideas this album is centered around.
Ralf: Yes exactly, we get our inspirations from all surroundings of personal life and emotions, also from those never-ending wars all over the world and here and there we have some critical stuff to tell….basically we use a lot of our own illusions and imaginations…..sometimes we add a little bit of science fiction, fantasy and epic.
Powerline A.D.: The opening song "Riding the Eagle" is quite bombastic, with soaring vocals and a relentless pace, but it doesn't really set the tone for the album, which is pleasingly varied. I found it to be pretty awesome that I wasn't able to predict much of anything in my first listen.
Ralf: Yeah, we intended to mix a bit of everything from our typical Primal Fear style up to those bombastic and also epic feelings which you can hear in songs like “Black Rain” or “No smoke without a fire”. As I have mentioned before, we have now 4 great songwriters in the band. That provides the opportunity to add all our personal styles and inputs into the music. And this ends up in a very well listenable summary with a healthy variety.
Powerline A.D.: There are quite a few tracks in the latter half of the album that a very reminiscent of Primal's earlier work. "Killbound" and "Smith & Wesson" come to mind. Was this natural or intended?
Ralf: We are lucky enough that it came natural… if you’re planning to write those songs it mostly ends up in disaster…Magnus has been a Primal Fear fan long before he joined the band. So we didn’t really have to force him to catch up on our style….he definitely delivered some great riffs which could have been on the first couple of PF albums as well.
Powerline A.D.: Despite this sort of nod to the earlier days, tracks like "Soar" show the band showcasing some interesting ideas, with a electronic, effect laden segment in the center of the song that then flows back into the chorus. There is also a very heavy emphasis on keys. Tell me about some of these new ideas.
Ralf: Basically such things are not planned. You just try out what fits best to an idea you have and when it sounds cool for the song in the end, everything is possible and everything could be used….as long as the song still rocks, it’s absolutely ok to use different ingredients.
Powerline A.D.: One of my favorite tracks is the closer, "Hands of Time." An amazing track, very different from anything you guys have released yet. Why did you guys decide to have Matt sing lead vocals on this track?
Ralf: It was a decision which was made during the prerecording session in Sweden. The three guys sat together and wrote songs and then had this idea for "Hands in Time." And as they have started to record the vocals with Magnus, Henny and Mat, they thought this could be a good idea for the album. In the end it was decided to do it that way. It’s a great tune!
Powerline A.D.: One more about the new album: "5.0/Torn" is my absolute favorite Primal Fear track. How the hell did you guys come up with such a killer tune?
Ralf: It’s great to have 4 people in the band with the talent of writing songs! So this one is the result of a co-working process from Mat and Magnus….this one was composed two years ago already and we thought it fits perfect on 16.6... And it looks like it really does!
Powerline AD: 16.6 has been out for a few weeks now. How do you feel about its reception thus far?
Ralf: Just overwhelmed! The chart entries and all the good comments about it are a great reward for the hard work we put in that album. We are very grateful that it is so well accepted in the scene!
Powerline A.D.: The band has been around for a little over a decade and yet has an astounding eight full length albums... that's about an album per year and a half. Where does the drive and inspiration come from?!
Ralf: As I have said before, we have the fortune to have 4 good songwriters in the band. This helps a lot in getting enough and great tunes together for producing an album every year!
Powerline A.D.: You guys have an ability to appeal to metal fans both young and old, lovers of classic, balls-to-the-wall heavy metal, as well as those more accustomed to the modern scene. Is it easy balancing the forward momentum of the ever changing genre while still maintaining respect to its roots?
Ralf: It comes just naturally. As we always look ahead, we evolve with the modern scene but we also know where we come from and where our roots are. It’s a great gift that all members of the band are open to different kind of styles.
Powerline A.D.: On a personal note, your style has evolved pretty dramatically since the release of Primal Fear. With all of the touring, you must get plenty of time to practice and refine your voice and performance. Do you ever need to set aside time to practice or is Primal Fear enough?
Ralf: Primal Fear is enough to keep my voice in shape. I have the luck that my voice still does what I want when I open my mouth.
Powerline AD: You've recorded several albums with a group called Tyran' Pace, three with Gamma Ray, and have done various guest appearances over the years. When will we be seeing you enter the realm of solo recording?
Ralf: Actually I am working on my solo album…. it’s gonna be not totally different to the PF style but I will experiment and try out a bit more here and there.
Powerline A.D.: You recently announced some U.S. dates later this year. I speak for all NA fans when I say: Fuck yes! I'll see you in LA! Any last words for the readers?
Ralf: AND WE ARE DEFINITELY LOOKING FORWARD TO HIT THE STATES AGAIN WITH A GREAT ALBUM IN OUR LUGGAGE!!!
