A Million Years, an exciting new alternative rock band in NYC

Formed a few years ago, it took A Million Years some time to settle on a stable line-up. The current set of musicians — Keith Madden (vocals/guitars), Andrew Samaha (bass), Andrew Vanette (drums) and Nick Werber (guitar) recently released a 3-song EP, Incandescent, produced by Longwave’s Shannon Ferguson. The band are now back in the studio with Ferguson, recording their debut full-length album, to be released in the spring.

The following is an interview with vocalist/guitarist Keith Madden.

Are you satisfied with the way the Incandescent EP came out and how it has been received?
Keith Madden: We've been extremely pleased with the way people have responded to the Incandescent EP. We had been building fans steadily since the band started in 2007 but once the EP was released there was a definitive increase in the degree to which people took us seriously. Aside from simply making a great sounding record that level of acknowledgement was one of our goals. We've also been tracking the downloads of the EP on our website www.amillionyears.net and the number has been climbing quickly so it's been great.

What's up next for the band?
Madden: We are in the studio finishing our full length record since January and it's looking like we're going to release it in late Spring. There is definitely going to be a CD release party and big push to somehow get our fans involved in the release in some way. After that we're going to go back out on the road to promote it.

Would you say it is harder or easier to be an up-and-coming band in New York City?
Madden: Hopefully this doesn't sound like a cop-out but to be honest it falls into both categories. On the one had you're in this place with thousands of bands and it can be very difficult to stand out unless you make a concerted effort to set yourself apart. On the other hand NYC affords small bands the opportunity to engage with so many like minded people and useful resources that you aren't likely to find in smaller cities and towns. It's easy to get lost in it so you have make your own map and stick to it.

Your sound is very tight live. You have shared the stage with seasoned NY acts and kept up with their performance. That says a lot for a young band. What do you contribute this to? — A musically
strong connection with all the band members, good songwriting and musicianship, or plain overall charisma?
Madden: Thank you, we appreciate the compliment. It's a combination of elements. We all have a lot of faith in the songs we write. We spend so many hours of the week working on them together or thinking about them when we're on our own that eventually they more or less end up sounding like we hope they will. That makes them easy for us to connect to when we play them live and hopefully easier for the audience to connect to as well. We also realized that all of the bands we love seeing live don't have any reservations when they're on stage. They love playing their music and they're not afraid to do it with every bit of themselves. We want to do it like that.

The band claims to be strongly influenced by "the intellectualism of bands like Radiohead." Can you can explain that in more detail?
Madden: We've always been attracted to bands who treat their songs and records like precious pieces of art. They give attention to every detail and there is a thought behind every decision made. Whether or not we always agree with those reasons is another story but there is a cohesion to the whole thing you're hearing or the performance you're seeing because the artist is connected to every bit of it. It makes you think about what you're absorbing. It makes you work for it. Once we've laid down the ground work for a song, it goes in and out of that kind of filter so that we can fill it with meaning or learn what it's all about. And then you have to forget all that so you can just play the thing.

What are the main influences of the band outside of modern rock?
Madden: We listen to a lot of different things but I would say that a lot of electronica and dance music has subtle (or maybe sometimes not so subtle) influences on our stuff. Structures of songs, textures and general ambiance. The darker the better! Sometimes when we're messing with our quieter, more organic songs we'll look to a lot of jazz and folk music because those artists know how to treat the music in such a particular way. We are young. There is much to learn.

What is the meaning behind the choice of name: "A Million Years"?
Madden: Back when the band was starting out it took a really long time to finish our debut and an even longer time to complete the line up with members to play those songs. The name A Million Years was sitting on a long list of possible band names and all of a sudden it seemed to make sense. It also has this sort of grandiose thing about it that we liked a lot.
