U.K. Ad Campaign Uses Mediocre Cover of "Sweet Child O' Mine"
Look! Guns N' Roses left me a camera!
John Lewis, often tagged as Britian's favorite retailer, is using a folksie cover of Guns N' Roses 1987 hit song "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Taken By Trees to evoke the "magic and fevered excitement" of Christmas through adverts.
The ad agency, Adam & Eve, states that the ad "captures the innocent excitement of of childhood in a very poignant way."
Bah Humbug.
Taken By Trees version is mediocre compared to the original, which was energetic and reflective. Axl Rose and Slash uniquely combined their talent to make it a rock classic. Taken By Trees add some nice piano to the song but Victoria Bergsman's vocals force an innocence to it. It comes out sentimental at best, and with the ad behind it, it is just plain wishy-washy.
Was the original version of the song too strong? And, finally: it's somewhat shocking that Axl let it be used like this. Then again, Axl is so tough to figure out as it is.
Supposedly, John Lewis will add a link to iTunes and MySpace on its website to allow fans to download the Taken By Trees track.

Can't agree more- "open your ears! So where do you stand on GnR's cover of Live And Let Die? Knocking On Heaven's Door?"
Thank you for sharing.
What a very narrow-minded attitude to Taken by Trees version of the original. Is that Pat or Prat??? Each to their own I suppose.
Agreed - open your ears! So where do you stand on GnR's cover of Live And Let Die? Knocking On Heaven's Door?
It's a gentle, interesting take on the original. Would you prefer a note-for-note session-band rock cover? Or do you honestly think the original would convey the sentiment that this cover does?
sure, appetite was a great album. one of the best of its era. but everything after is pure crap. the live and let die cover is easily one of the worst recordings of all time. the knockin' on heaven's door wasn't far behind.
