Armored Saint's Cover of Judas Priest's "Never Satisfied" is a Real Gem of a Download
Talk about integrity. The band Armored Saint never followed the trends. They stayed tried-and-true to old school heavy metal through it all — through all the trends of thrash, industrial, pop, and hair metal. It made them real, authentic. An over-the-top band like Manowar often brag that they are "real" metal but it is actually a band like Armored Saint that is true to metal's original form. That is why their cover of Judas Priest's underrated song "Never Satisfied" (off of the often overlooked album Rocka Rolla) is so special. It is a nod to their main influences — the sound they always remained true to. Coincidentally, the album this Saint cover is on is called Nod to the Old School (2001).
In Armored Saint's version of "Never Satisfied," the guitars are brought to the front (the crunch of great KK riffs realized!) and John Bush's vocals roughen up the overall feel. Bush has always been a top-notch vocalist for heavy music. Bush can't hit that piercing Halford high-note at the end of the song — who the hell can?! — but he gives it more of a distinguished growl, effective in its own way. It's almost a hint at how Halford might sing it now. In fact, Priest were never satisfied (pun intended) with the production of Rocka Rolla (even if Sabbath producer Roger Bain was at the helm), so this might even be the kind of production they would have preferred.
