Judas Priest is Still One of the Best Live Shows in Heavy Metal
Better late than never. It took me a while to finally listen to Judas Priest's recent live album release, A Touch of Evil — Live. Unleashed in the East is one of my favorite live albums and the other Priest live album (with vocalist Rob Halford), 1987's Priest ... Live!, is, quite possibly,my least favorite. (I don't count the two live albums Priest made with Ripper Owens.) So, any new Priest live disc put in front of me is not met with a lot of enthusiasm.
I'm loyal to the old Priest to a fault. This new live disc is as close to Unleashed as the band might ever get. All the new songs are wonderfully heavy, especially the opener "Judas Rising," the Black Sabbath-y "Death," and surprisingly "Between the Hammer & the Anvil" and "Eat Me Alive." The studio versions of "Between the Hammer & the Anvil" and "Eat Me Alive" don't get much of my listening time, but these will. It's as if they have risen from the dust with a new gloss on them. A heavy thick gloss. If only the originals had sounded this good.
The winner for me was most definitely the inclusion of "Dissident Aggressor." One of the best Priest songs ever penned. In fact, I'll go as far as to say that it is one of the best hard rock songs ever to be penned. On A Touch of Evil — Live it is not as phenomenal as the studio version, but it is still quite fantastic. The difference has the arcane sense of being metallically bludgeoned instead of decapitated. It racks your senses so much — like the original — you want to light a cigarette after listening to it. This time the riffs are meatier, overpoweringly fat, rather than riding high on the studio's razor-sharp and slick production. Halford's vocals also take on the same tone. I've waited my whole life to hear this song live and, finally, rewarded. The only thing that could have made it that much better is if it were preluded by "Here Come the Tears."
A Touch of Evil — Live is a worthwhile purchase for any serious Priest fan. This is solid stuff. Especially if you like, as Rob Halford puts it, your "Priest-style Heavy Metal" as heavy as possible. And that kind of means forgetting all the bad stuff in the 80s. We can only be thankful there is no "Turbo Lover" on this disc. That broke my heart. This revives it.
