Finnish metal powerhouse Thoumas Saukkonen is at it again. Easily one of the most hard working musicians in the industry, he has released a staggering nine full length albums across numerous projects, in addition countless demos, EPs, and live performances since early 2000. With so much going on at any given time, it is a wonder that the material he releases is of consistently high quality. Black Sun Aeon is his most recent musical affair, and a mere year after the release of the 2009 debut Darkness Walks Beside Me, Thoumas has unleashed the second full length, double album Routa, and it is a beast!

Black Sun Aeon is an outlet for some of Saukkonen's darker, more depressing musical concepts. It still features his trademark melodies, somber, moody, and melodic, but ventures into the droning, slower tempo moments more in line with his doom contemporaries. From the introductory track "Core of Winter", Routa takes the listener on a sonic journey into the coldness of the heart of winter. This album is all about the groove, and steady, powerful rhythms punctuate unique song structures throughout. Each track drips with dreary atmosphere, due largely to the fantastic dynamic between Saukkonen's superb growls and the distinctive clean passages by guest vocalist Mikko Heikkilä (Sinamore).

There is a profoundly desolate feeling that infects the listener with every passing song. The album is lengthy, clocking in at an hour and twenty minutes, yet there is a staggering amount of depth that makes repeated listens a given. Tracks like "Sorrowsong" embody an almost otherworldly sense of loss and tragedy, and the haunting croons of guest vocalist Janica Lönn (Nocturnal, Lunar Path) on "Dead Sun Aeon" add yet another layer of melancholy to the mix.

The album does pick up the pace on occasion, such as in the latter half of the skull crushing "Frozen Kingdom," a characteristic that would certainly have added a refreshing injection of variety to the mix had it been utilized more often. The closing track "Apocalyptic Reveries" represents of Saukkonen's most mature writing to date, balancing a series of heavy to slow segments and a fascinatingly eclectic ambiance more at home on a Pink Floyd release with a fully acoustic final passage. A surprising way to end the album.

When considering the production on Routa one must merely reference the 2009 debut Darkness Walks Beside Me, as it is literally a carbon clone with no discernible changes. The mix is thick, with heavily distorted, crunchy guitars, surprisingly audible bass guitar, with percussion, synth and vocals pushed to the forefront of the mix. It is dirty, and should be no other way given the style of the album.

The bottom line: An absolute must of fans of melodic doom metal of the highest caliber, and of course, fans of Saukkonen's many projects.
