Emperor - Live @ Wacken 2006 DVD

Live @ Wacken 2006 is the culmination of nearly a decade of desperation by a fanbase who, above all else, feel that the end of the influential symphonic black metal masters Emperor came far too soon. Having plunged the existential blade into their own breast after the release of their final, and by leaps and bounds best album, Emperor stands as a monumental example of a group that set aside the trappings of commercialism and embraced the end when they knew it was time. Despite years of pressure from a well established and indeed growing mass of supporters, Emperor has made it clear that there will be no fifth album. However, in late 2005 they returned to the stage in a surprise show in Oslo, Norway, the first in a series of intimate gigs and select festival dates in the U.S. and Europe during 2006-2007.

The show documented on this DVD was their headlining performance at the enormous metal festival Wacken Open Air, in front of nearly seventy thousand screaming fans. The quality of the video is impeccable, with epic, sweeping camera angles cataloging the groups largest gig in their career. There is an immense sense of power coming from the members, particularly so from songwriter, and guitarist/vocalist, Ihsahn. There are occasions where he stands in the center of the stage, staring into the raging crowd, where he truly appears to command the hearts and minds of the thousands before him. Switching between his trademark rasps to soaring, epic operatic vocals, I have never seen a performance with such minimal theatrics captivate an audience in the way Emperor does. The entire experience literally left me with chills and butterflies.

The recording itself is also superb, with each instrument and voice crystal clear without sacrificing the inherently dissonant atmosphere of the band's music. The set list is exactly what any veteran Emperor fan would expect, pulling favorites from each album, and even throwing in a few surprises ("Cosmic Keys to My Creations and Times," "Towards the Pantheon" sticking out the most). What truly makes this release a gem is the inclusion of "In the Wordless Chamber," one of the countless superb tracks from the band's incredible final album Prometheus: The Disciplines of Fire and Demise. This was a treat to see, as the band split without touring in support of the album, and thus these songs were never performed live. There is little to say about this release that is not glowingly enthusiastic, but there could have been more sustained camera shots of each member, the band's drummer Trym in particular. I also had the pleasure of seeing the band in their final two U.S. performances, and the set list was identical with the addition of "Ye Entrancemperium" as a closer, so it was tragic they didn't play it on this gig.

The bottom line: An essential piece of the legacy of Emperor, and the finest example of why they stand to this day as an enormous force in extreme metal, who are cherished, emulated and longed for even now. The Emperor is dead, long live the Emperor!
