Muse Winning the Best Album Artwork of 2009 for "The Resistance" is Questionable
Well, at least it seems questionable to me, as someone who knows art direction.
www.artvinyl.com gave the 2010 award to Muse.
I'm wondering if the award was given more out of biz buzz than true creative effect.
It's a strange thing. Just the other day I was thinking how inferior The Resistance artwork is in comparison to their last album, Black Holes and Revelations. The cover image on Muse's The Resistance lacks the same provocative expression. It seemed so 'by the way, we need an album cover ... wow, this pops, let's use this' kind of feel.
Sure, The Resistance artwork is colorful and charismatic in its simplicity. But put it up against something with similar characteristics, such as Dark Side of the Moon. Could you ever see the The Resistance artwork being as iconic as Dark Side of the Moon?
Nah. Look at them side by side.
Dark Side of the Moon blows it away.
And a contemporary, the 2009 album, U2's No Line On The Horizon, was way better (no. 49 on the artvinyl list) in its message, its feel, in its simple beauty.
Muse's music on The Resistance, however — the most important thing, anyway — outshined U2's 2009 effort.
